Has anyone told you that it’s fun to play with English words For a long time these “words within words” in English have been used to surprise and educate us…and they often make us laugh too. Now we go to learn about them.
Riddles(謎語)
How did the animals open the zoo door They used a monkey! What’s the longest word in English Smiles—there’s a “mile” between the first and last letters! These jokes —a question followed by a surprising answer — are known as “riddles”. But the ones above are examples of a special kind of riddle, a riddle which is funny because a word is hidden within another word. Many English speakers are crazy about this kind of words with double meaning. And it can be found in texts written in English a very long time ago. But riddles are not the only example of “words within words”.
Hidden words
During Victorian times (1837—1901), the game of hiding words within a whole sentence became popular. Look carefully at this sentence—The king eats his lunch in a fine palace. Can you see that the countries “ China” and “Nepal” are hidden in it The Victorians even used hidden words to teach children history and geography at school. Today we still see hidden word games in books and magazines, but we also use hidden words in jokes.
Palindromes(回文詞)
Palindromes are words and phrases which can be read the same forwards and backwards. The pop group “Abba”, for example, is a palindrome. The sentence “Was it a car or a cat I saw ” is also a palindrome. We find them interesting, but they can also be funny: I kept receiving emails about reading maps backwards, but then I realized it was just spam(垃圾郵件)!
1.Which of the following is a riddle
A. step—pets, part—trap B. hiding words within a whole sentence
C. silent—listen, the eyes—they see D. Which letter is a question Y (Why) .
2. By reading the article we can know “___________”.
A. Riddles are the only example of “words within words”.
B. Victorians even used riddles to teach kids history at school.
C. “Was it a car or a cat I saw ” is a palindrome as well.
D. These “words within words” in English often make us cry.
3.The best title of the passage is ________.
A. It’s fun to play with words B. “Words within words” educate us
C. Riddles & Hidden words D. The pop group “Abba”
Getting a high grade in an exam depends partly on how much you can remember. So, improving memory is important to success in studying. But is there anything that we can do about it One way might be walking backwards. According to a new study, walking backwards, whether doing it really or just imagining it, can improve the memory in the short term.
In the study, 114 volunteers were asked to watch a video. In the video a woman had her bag stolen. Then they answered 20 questions about the details shown in the video. Ten minutes later, the volunteers were divided into three groups. The first two groups were told to move forwards or backwards 10 meters while the third group was asked to stay still on the same point. The researchers found that the backwards-walking group got two more correct answers on average (平均) than the other two groups.
This suggests that a relationship between time and space is basic to the way our minds form memories. When we walk backwards, everything we learn becomes strange to us. “This forces the brain to think in a different way—the brain needs to match all the things again and changes the focus(關(guān)注點),” the researcher Christine Weber said. It almost always means that our brain needs to be more active in the short time. Naturally, our short-term memory will be improved.
Backward walking also plays an important role in physical health, especially fitness. A study published in Journal of Biomechanics in 20xx found that there is less pain in the knees.
Moreover, backward walking, compared to forward walking, is more challenging. It requires you to use muscles(肌肉) and movements that you probably seldom use, making it a perfect way to change your exercise habit for greater fitness gains. At the same time, by making people put in extra effort, it naturally burns more fat and calories.
1. Backward walking can________ according to the passage.
A. improve the memory in the long term B. improve the memory in the short term
C. cause much more pain in our knees D. force the brain to think in the same way
2.Which one is the correct order of the following according to the passage

China and Western countries may have different cultural beliefs about certain animals, but when it comes to pigs, we have somehow reached an agreement—that pigs are ugly, lazy, stupid and shameless.
Just look at the idioms and phrases in our languages. In Chinese, we have the likes of “ Boiling a dead pig” and “A pig looking in the mirror is still a pig”. And in English, there are expressions such as “eating like a pig” and “sweating like a pig”. None of them are exactly praise.
But truth is that pigs do have some fine qualities. And maybe there’s no better time to clear their names than now, with the arrival of Year of the Pig on Chinese Spring Festival.
For starters, science had proved that pigs aren’t stupid at all. According to a paper published last year in the International Journal of Comparative Psychology, pigs are “mentally and socially similar to dogs and chimpanzees(黑猩猩)”. By training, pigs can learn some skills, such as dancing and swimming. They like to play. They have good long-term memories. And they can tell between who treat them well and those who don’t.
There are popular pig characters in cartoons too. In the UK cartoon series Peppa Pig, the four members of the cartoon’s pig family teach children from all over the world about love, friendship, and the value of family. And in China, the adventures of Mc Dull, a piglet who works hard toward his dreams even though he keeps failing, have been recounted in films since 20xx. “People care too much about the immediate results, but Mc Dull is slow and patient, and not afraid of repeating failure,” said Mc Dull’s creator Brain Tse. “He has a heart of gold.”
Perhaps these are the qualities of pigs to keep in heart when we celebrate the New Year—their wisdom, cuteness, patience and bravery.
1.The writer mentioned some idioms and phrases in Paragraph 2 mainly to show________.
A. all of the idioms and phrases are exactly praise
B. people all agree pigs are ugly, lazy, stupid and shameless
C. the truth that pigs do have some fine qualities

C. Pigs have some good qualities. D. We have some cute cartoon pigs.
4.What does the writer write this article for
A. Clearing the pigs’ names. B. Celebrating the New Year.

He always gets interest from the people who borrow money from him. Antonio promises he will pay the money back in three months, or Shylock will be allowed to cut out 1 pound of flesh out of Antonio’s body.
Bassanio successfully wins the love of Portia but soon realizes his friend can not pay the money back to Shylock on time. Bassanio returns to Venice as fast as he can and attends a trial(審訊).The reason why Antonio isn’t able to pay is because his ships are caught in storm. Portia, dressing up as a young lawyer, claims (聲稱) that the words “ 1 pound of flesh” not “1 pound of flesh and blood”. She says that Shylock is only allowed to remove flesh, but not any blood, which is impossible. Thus, she helps make Antonio safe and make Shylock fail. At the same time, Shylock loses most of his money. At the end, .

Sometimes, it seems that with all the homework and stress, being a student can be the worst thing. For people who are being bullied (欺凌), however, having too much work to do is the least of their worries.
Bullying comes in many different forms. It could be someone hitting you, someone sending you terrible messages on social media, or someone saying bad words to you. No matter how it happens, being bullied is never a nice experience.
Being bullied can do great harm to a child’s personal development. It is hard for bullying victims to trust others. They often feel angry, no valuable, helpless and lost. And these feelings will further undermine(破壞) their ability to control their own life.
So if you or someone you know is being bullied, how should you deal with it
Well, you need to find out why the bully is acting this way. The reasons behind school bullying are various. Children are now more easily influenced by violence in both real life and online. They want to gain power by bullying other students. Usually, they pick on the nicest or most well behaved person. Because this kind of persons seldom fight back. Some left-behind children become bullies because they lack (缺失) family education.
Whatever the reason is, there are many different ways to deal with a bully. The clearest way is to share your problem with someone else. All bullying is wrong. It is important that you talk about the problem with someone you can trust. Usually the best way to end your problem is to talk to your teacher or parents. Or, in some cases, standing up to the bullies may change their behavior. If they know that their bullying doesn’t work on you any more, they may stop. What’s more, parents and schools should devote more time and efforts to the troubled children.
Most importantly, remember this: If you’re being bullied, it’s not your fault. There’s always someone to help you—you just need to ask first.
